"We must keep it open. This hospice helps so many loved ones and families and it is somewhere for Rotherham to be proud of.
"I want to get across to people that the hospice is not just about dying. Of course that is significant part of it and it would be wrong to try and forget that, but it is such a great place offering so many services, including day care and counselling.
John Hinchcliffe, vice-chairman of the hospice, was pleased to welcome John; "We are delighted to welcome John and officially recognise him for the work he has done as an ambassador for the hospice as well as his invaluable efforts to help raise the £1.9 million needed every year." he said.
"The hospice is for the Rotherham people and who better to promote it than a local legend."
John then looked forward to this years memory walk which takes place next week on 20th June; "We are on our way to the first 100 walkers signing up, I was worried about the impact of the credit crunch but it looks like our second walk will be just as much of a success."
The registration fee is £7.50 for adults and £5 for under 16s and includes a t-shirt, commemorative medal and a Pukka pie to prepare for the hike.
Anyone interested in taking part should contact the Rotherham Hospice fund-raising team on 01709 308917.
