Evans has been chasing the 33 year-old's signature all week after working with the defender at Crawley Town previously, and he knows what Davis is all about.
Evans will try and tie up the deal over the weekend with tomorrow's clash at Oxford now postponed.
He said, talking to the Advertiser: “Before Claude Davis came to Crawley we were conceding too many soft goals but he came in and was a man mountain at that club.
“He's outstanding in the air, strong, aggressive, noone will outrun him and he's got the heart of a lion. It's would be good to have him on board.”
Evans added: “The back two has not been right and if I'm bringing a centre-half in, it is fair to say there would be one too many. I want to get Kari Arnason back into midfield and we're looking at all the options.”
Skipper Ian Sharps is widely expected to leave the club before the transfer window closes.
