The game was a near sell-out with nearly 11,500 packed into New York Stadium to see the Millers run out 2-1 victors over Sheffield Wednesday.
After problems after the Chesterfield game last season, The Millers and South Yorkshire Police were keen to avoid opposing fans clashing, and directed both sets of fans away from each other after the final whistle. (Most of the SWFC fans had gone by then anyway)
Speaking to the Advertiser, the Millers Chief Operating Officer Paul Douglas said; “We put a lot of work into ensuring people weren't in the wrong part of the ground and thanks must go to Sheffield Wednesday's ticket office for supporting our checks on data bases."
“I think (most of) the Sheffield supporters behaved themselves and have been a credit to the club. Both sets of fans sang all night and it was a great evening and a great night for football. It is difficult to keep fans apart and we pulled it off. A lot of work goes on behind the scenes with South Yorkshire Police and our stewards and our safety officer and on nights like that it pays offs.Everyone went to the New York Stadium and had an enjoyable evening and a safe evening and will want to come again.”
“The game shows this stadium can handle the big occasions. That is something like the sixth full house we've had since we opened. There were about 500 odd segregated seats and a few disabled people who weren't there, but to all intents and purposes it was a full house" he added.
