England sack McClaren

A panel of 12 met at FA HQ on Thursday morning to discuss McClaren's fate after England lost their last two qualifying games in Russia and last night at Wembley to blow any chance of going to Austria and Switzerland next year.

He told BBC Sport last night: "I'm not stepping down but I take responsibility - it was my job to get us qualified and I failed to do it but I'm not discussing my future so soon after the game, we're all trying to digest the result and everyone is down."

McClaren, along with assistant Terry Venables, gets the chop with an expected payoff in the region of £2.5m, 18 months into a four year contract. Jose Mourinho is a widely tipped successor for McClaren, but feel free to throw other names into the frame on our messageboard.
