A scrambled goal from skipper Johnny Mullins in the 64th minute sent the Rotherham faithful wild. And victory was sealed in injury time when Lee Frecklington condemned Aldershot to non-league football.
"We were expected to achieve it and we did," he said. "It's a fantastic achievement by everyone from the chairman to everyone inside the football club."
He added: "And the supporters as well of whom I have often spoken and they were at their best and they have helped us again.
"A lot of people doubted the squad but we kept believing and we always believed over the 46 games. It was always the objective to lead Rotherham to League One and its now about enjoying what we have achieved."
Andy Scott - sacked by Rotherham just over a year ago - said Aldershot had "not been good enough".
"I've been working hard since I came through the door, but you can only work with what you've got," he said.
"We have a pre-season plan in place and we have players we want to bring in and we know the football and the formation we want to play and if we can bring players in that fit those criteria we'll be okay.
"It's going to be a long close season and there will be a lot of doom and gloom around the place but we know when we come back everyone will be focused on the job in hand.
"We have to run the ship properly. It has had too many holes in it all season."
