Talking to the Rotherham Advertiser Hurst said: "To top the appearances list would be an honour and a privilege.
"When you start out in your career, it's not something you look at and it's very unusual in today's game where players move on from club to club.
"Since last season I've become more aware of the record but because of injury it didn't materialise. If I'd been fit I would like to think I'd have got extremely close to it at least but I've been lucky throughout my career with injuries, so I can't complain too much."
The 32 year old one club man is still feeling fit and fresh. "I feel good; fingers crossed. The injury was worse than what I thought but I've come back and done all the running and I'm raring to go.
"There was a concern at the end of last season over whether we could attract the players of the right standard. But I think the manager's done that."
