"You can't come in and do that after just one bad performance. We need competition for places but the lads in the side have proved how good they are during the season and Tuesday just wasn't like them.
"They've got an opportunity at Crewe and it's a final opportunity. If the players perform the way they have previously then they'll stay in the side. If they don't then I'll have to do something about it.
"We could have done with a free week," he said. "I met everyone on Monday and then on Tuesday we had the game.
"I don't think there's a great deal wrong and we'll get the chance to assess one or two things. I want us to get back to confident passing because there were too many long balls the other night. We need to get it down and play."
