31 year old striker Drewe Broughton tells todays Advertiser that he's going to fight for a place at Rotherham United after making only his 3rd syaty of the season in last weekends win at Bradford - where he scored the Millers 4th goal.
"At this stage of my career, I want to be playing, but I also want to be at a team that's at the top, I've been at the bottom end and I want to be in a successful team now and earn that right."
"It's a tussle between me and Popey but one of the reasons we're up near the top of the league is because there is fierce competition for places. I know when I'm out there that I've got to perform and so does he and so does Ryan Taylor."
"You have to be at the top of your game and that's the beauty of having a chairman who is backing the manger and letting him spend so much money. Competition almost does the job for you because the lads know they have to perform or they'll be out of contract. There's a lot at stake."
Broughton spoke about last weekends game; "I was cramping up by the time I scored because it was my first game in a while, but it was a great performance from the lads, The manager said after the FA Cup defeat at Luton that we had to get back to basics and regain that pure work ethic; working for every ball and fighting for every ball."
"When you have a poor run, it's about rolling your sleeves up and fighting your way back. It was a long week after Luton. It was a bit of a drubbing there and that's not us. It was just about getting back down to sheer hard work, fighting for the badge and fighting for each other. If we do that, you can see the quality in the side."
"The quality we have got is ridiculous but without fight you're never going to win anything. The best teams fight first and play second. Chelsea do it. It takes me back to the time I played under Paul Ince at MK Dons. He was technically very good but he was also a warrior."
Drewe then looked forward to the festive games, where the Millers face 5 of the teams around them in the league; "We've some big teams to play and it's an exciting time as well as a pivotal time, Everything builds up to Christmas and when you go into the new year it's about consolidating week in and week out at the top to seal promotion, or the bottom to stay up. I'm really optimistic that come January 1 we can be in a great spot." he said.
