The skipper, still only 23, insisted "I'm still learning" after being hauled off in last weekends 3-3 draw at Torquay by boss Andy Scott.
But Cressy says he's still improving as a player and captain amidst critics from a few supporters. He told the Advertiser today: “The gaffer wanted to change the system a bit. He had a word with me and said his decision wasn't performance-based. He wanted to freshen it up. I appreciated that chat.
“It's a learning curve for me. I think a lot of people think I'm a 33-year-old experienced centre-half. The fact is I'm 23- years-old, I'm still learning the game and the gaffer is willing to help me out. I've got a lot of respect for him and I'd like to think he has for me. It's nothing to worry about.
“As for their goal, I think the wind caused a bit of the problem but there is no excuse. I should have dealt with the situation better.”
Explaining his decision to take off his captain, Scott said: “I just felt the game was getting away from us a little bit and we were dropping too deep. It was tactical. We needed a bit more pace on the pitch to combat them.”
Cresswell sees that as a positive also, adding;. “If the gaffer sees something that can change to get us three points then he'll do it. I think people forget that it's a squad game now. It's not just about the starting 11, it's about everyone—that's the modern game now. Look at the top teams. They never put out the same team every week and I think it's credit to the gaffer that he has brought that thinking in here.
“I'm disappointed to have been fetched off but I'll learn from it and become a better person for it.
“If you score three goals then you should win. Defensive errors cost us. We're disappointed because we should have won the game and we lost four points last week. That's the standardswe have set. We don't want to be an entertaining side that concedes goals. We want to be an entertaining side that wins games.
“I'd rather slug a game out and win 1-0 than win an entertaining game 4- 3. I think you can get carried with entertaining football. I know it's good for the fans but as a player you want three points.”
