Harford made over seven hundred appearances in the league for clubs including Chelsea and Newcastle United. Recently he has managed at Nottingham Forest and most recently was assistant boss to Andy King at Swindon.
Harford told clubcall that he decided to join Rotherham after being convinced by the board that the Millers were a club going places: "It's a big club and a well respected club. Hopefully with the new
stand and management team we will progress, bring in some new players and get ready for a promotion push."
Meanwhile he has warned his players that they are playing for their futures in the next five games, and he will expect to see commitment from the squad. Harford also tells clubcall that he's told the players he wants to see points on the board before the end of the season:
"We won't treat these games as friendlies. I like to win football matches and we will go into the next five with a positive and professional attitude. We could still have a big say in who gets relegated."
Harford says that he has discussed a list of transfer targets with the board and that he plans to add to the squad for next season. The new manager also says that taking the League One title is top priority for next season.
"Our aim is to get Rotherham back into the championship. If that wasn't my ambition I wouldn't be here, and I think it's a distinct possibility that if we bring in the right people into the club we can do it."
