Millers Fans Show Community Spirit

Lifelong Millers fan Steven Matthews was the man who came up with idea after he grew tired of seeing a tired and outdated Millmoor each home game. “This all came about when there was a lull in the game with Gillingham in September. I was looking around the ground in general and thought how sad and tired some parts of the ground were looking. I pictured this brand new stand gleaming like a figure head and how it would look in comparison with the rest of the ground” explained Steven. “It gave me thought as to how much time and effort it would take if we Millers fans rallied and obtained some materials and offered our free time to assist our club to spruce up parts of the ground.”

When Steven put his idea to his fellow Rotherham fans, he received an overwhelming response both in terms of numbers wanting to help and offers of financial support. “I just wanted to see what kind of response the idea would generate really. The amount of positive replies made me realise that there are genuine fans who are willing to help our beloved club. I've been contacted by email from a fan as far away as Singapore, who obviously can't be here to help but, has kindly donated 50 pounds to help buy materials. Others have also donated cash and this has helped to kick start the fund for buying materials.”
Millmoor is currently already going under re-development with a planned new stand that work commenced on in July and the helpful fans have plenty of other work to be going on with. “I've asked other fans for their input as to what they feel could do with re-painting and things and we’ve had a few suggestions so far. The family stand gable end, stanchions and flag poles would be an ideal project to paint. Generally, anything that we feel would benefit being painted will be, cost and time permitting.”

Steven has received a very positive reaction from the club itself and have contacted him personally to pass on their thanks. “We have had an excellent response from the board. Peter Ruchniewicz has sent me a personal message saying how much the board appreciates all the fans help with this project. Phil Henson has been a good support and as always had the time to speak to me when I've visited the club during working hours. His offer of support has been invaluable and he will personally attend the ground on the day in question to make sure we gain entry.” The work is scheduled to go ahead on Sunday 9th October from around 10am.
