He explained: "Gavin went in for a block tackle and hes got a knee right in the top of his thigh.
"We thought he might have to come off and he carried on but when he was sat in the dressing room at half-time it was swollen.
"Im pleased with his attitude because he wanted to come out and play but I had to make the decision for him. Hopefully he'll be fine for Saturday. The key thing is he wants to play and hes a good player."
Gunning is on a months loan from Premiership Blackburn along with colleague Marcus Marshall, and has impressed at left back thus far.
