Johnstone's Paint are the new backers of the competition after agreeing a three-year deal worth a seven-figure fee with the Football League. The competition, which the Millers won in 1996 has been running for 23 years and gives teams from the lower leagues a chance to visit Wembley / Cardiff to play for a trophy. "This is excellent news and provides a real end of season boost for League clubs. All supporters want to see their club competing for silverware and the Johnstone's Paint Trophy gives clubs from Leagues 1 and 2 a cup competition that realistically they can win." Football League chairman Lord Mawhinney said when announcing the deal"The financial rewards of this competition can also be considerable. This season, for instance, Swansea City and Carlisle United each earned more than £250,000 from their appearance in the final." he added.
The competition will start in October, with the finalists playing the final at Wembley (should it ever get finished!) in March.
