Petit for Millers? Have we seen this before?

Headlines such as “Millers hopeful of signing Petit” and “Ronnie's reet into Petit” made a few of us get our hopes up, although realistically we know it is extremely unlikely that we can afford his wages.

It turns out that the rumours were created by the media blowing everything out of proportion, and then the Official Site published an article that we are all too familiar with – one that quashes the rumours. The article quoted Ronnie as saying:

“A couple of weeks ago I received a telephone call asking if I would be interested in him.

I said I would if he could prove his fitness but that is as far as it went.

I just don't know where stories like this come from - there's nothing been even thought about since that original phone call.”

No surprises there then!

On the other hand Ronnie sounded like he was interested when interviewed on footy heaven saying he’d obviously be interested in a player with the ability of Petit, but a lot of this speculation has come down to the players agent who was attempting to generate interest in the player. Furthermore, a lot would depend on the player’s fitness and wage demands – something which Ronnie emphasised to the agent.

The strange thing is how a very similar thing happened to our friends over at the pig sty. Dennis Hobson, a boxing promoter, recently spoke with Petit and drew him up on the shortlist of possible Wednesday transfer targets. He also offered
Sheffield Wednesday money for wages of possible transfer targets, although he would not put a figure on the amount he was willing to put into the club.

Recently our very own Neil Freeman came to RUFC with a similar offer, and Freeman is also RUMOURED to have spoken with Petit a few weeks ago. Given that Freeman is thought to have connections with the brother of David Hobson (Andy Hobson), it does seem a coincidence how very similar events are unfolding at both clubs!
