Robins scored 25 goals in season 2000/01 as the Millers gained promotion to the Championship, now Reid's total of 18 comes close to eclipseing that tally.
"It would be nice to see him hit that 20 goal mark and I'm sure he can do that," said Robins speaking to the Star.
"He was named League Two Player of the Month the other day and rightly so and I'm sure he would have liked to follow up with a win at Barnet and a goal but it wasn't to be our night or his.
"Now he has got to knuckle down again and maintain the form that he has shown over the last few months. If he does that then he can look back on a successful season."
Reid, 20, has opened talks about a new deal and Rotherham have been in contact with his agent, although the forward still has a year to run on his current contract.
Elsewhere, Stephen Brogan completed the third game of his comeback from injury last night as the second string drew a blank at Bradford City, the game ending goalless.
