Sharps took over the armband pre-season from Pablo Mills and admits it will be a difficult time.
"Mark's done a great job, considering he hadn't had any experience of being a manager when he joined us, he's certainly had a big impact," Sharps told The Star after Robins' move to Barnsley.
"He helped us to stay up in this division and if it hadn't have been for our points deduction then we could have been in the frame to get promoted last season.
"They've been testing circumstances for him, but he's come in and really done a great job for us.
"There's certainly no grudges from me towards him, I get on well with him, he made me captain. You know where you stand with Mark
"Everyone wants to play at the top level - and I think the same goes for managers, they want to test themselves at the highest level they can," added Sharps.
"I was surprised Barnsley sacked their manager when they did, it's still early in the season, but these opportunities don't come around too often.
"If we'd have lost our next ten games then Mark might have got the sack, so you can't blame him for wanting to take this opportunity.
"It's important as a club we all now stick together and keep performing, that's what the fans expect.
"We've got a potential banana skin match on Saturday against Morecambe, we've to play well and build on our excellent result against Chesterfield last weekend."
