Talbot had to be replaced by Darren Garner during the recent victory over Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough.
He told the club's official website, "My knee has been causing me a lot of problems for almost a year now and it is getting so bad that even pain killing injections are having no effect.
But there was no way I wanted to miss the Sheffield Wednesday game and I was determined I was going to play in that one.
"However, I just had to come off and now it looks as if I am going to need an operation, that should be decided this week when I see a specialist.
"It will probably mean me being out of action for around three months and I am aiming to be back for Christmas."
