"The football club in general needs to sit down and think where are we going!." he told RotherFM.
In a feature on BBCI Knill admits that he should have fought harder to keep the Millers star players Lee Williamson and Will Hoskins, even though the £1m plus transfer fee ensures the clubs financial security.
Knill was also looking to the board to the future, "I think you should always prepare and always be prepared for what's coming, Urgent talks? There has to be something one way or another. We have to sit down and decide where we are going as a football club - and the sooner the better, I think."
"We really need to know what we're gonna do as a football club, where we're gonna go and how we're gonna get there... I don't think it's 'wait and see'." he added.
"We have just sold our quality and, realistically, not got the quality to really compete every week - we might throw in a half here, a half there, but not the extent of quality to be what we want to be week in, week out.
"Somehow we have got to get it. We have to start somewhere and, I have to say, just about my best player every week is my young left-back (Stephen Brogan). I think that's a good place to start.
"He's a top, top player, he's Rotherham United through and through, and I think that is the way forward for us. We need more of his kind." he told the Rotherham Star.
