Despite being an integral part of a successful season Artell was overlooked for the Division One campaign amid rumours that he returned overweight and unfit. Still nowhere near the first team, Artell was allowed to join Shrewsbury Town in 2002 and once again became a regular for them.
He was lured to Mansfield, where he played with other ex Millers Richie Barker and Paul Warne, but moved on to Chester City after two years at Field Mill. With another two years under his belt at the Deva Stadium, where he ended the 06/07 season as player of the year, he was surprisingly released and has now been snapped up by Sammy McIlroy's Morecambe.
McIlroy was understandably happy at the acquisition. "He is a no nonsense defender who is extremely experienced for a 26-year-old. He has been a regular for Chester for the past two seasons and was highly rated by their fans. He is a player who knows Division 2 well which is a bonus and will be another excellent player to have around." the ex Northern Ireland boss told Morecambe's offficial website.
