Kayode Odejayi and Courtney Cameron's late goals gave Rotherham a deserved three points after Ashley Grimes had volleyed Dale infront in the first half against the run of play.
And Evans was pleased his team showed the character to stick at it to record their fifth straight away win in all competitions.
He said: "I think we were very unfortunate to go behind and I told the boys at half-time I was disappointed with the goal we conceded. But, we also said that we believed in them and with credit to the boys there`s not a lot of clubs who locked their players away last night but they got their just rewards today.
"This squad has great character but we don't kid ourselves, this was a real tough place to come and we got a thoroughly deserved three points. It came late but we had to work extremely hard for it.
"You look at the skies when you go one down with their first chance of the game. But from the first second of the second half we then had almost total domination which was pleasing."
