Instead they were hit with a sucker punch and were left with nothing, but the gaffer firmly believes his young squad will put the defeat to the back of their minds quickly.
"That's the frustrating part as in the first half we dominated while they had one chance that ended up in the back of the net. We were poor in terms of defending that attack but apart from that we did all right, everything else was straight forward.
"They defended deep and we got decent width from the full backs in the second half and the only thing that was lacking was the end product. As in the past we haven't taken our chances.
"There was a sense that they were on the back foot but we waited for things to drop but things don't happen that way, you can't teach players that. I won't criticise too much although we wanted the three points to push us up even further.
"It hasn't happened, we have a history of making things difficult for ourselves and that could be the same this year. I left Derek Holmes ut as they were set up to play against him and if the three lads up front had been on song in the first half we would have murdered them as we had a lot of the play.
"But we didn't maybe create as much as we wanted to, the lads are young and they have to be given their chance, it depends on them to see if they come through.
"We have to stick together from the supporters to the players if we are going to progress. For the most part the crowd was quiet but they got behind us in the second half as they normally do.
"We just didn't stick the knife in at the end and it's the first time we have back to back losses so it's MK Dons away next week, they are good games. Our games against the teams around us are in a cluster so we will see how we come out of them.
"It wasn't an ideal result today but we have 17 games left. We will put this defeat behind us and move on, confidence isn't dented. I am sure the chances we missed will go in on another day."
