This was our first ever meeting with Mansfield and their team had a complete recent overhaul where they brought in seven or eight really young lads so although we take every game seriously we knew that as the match went on we would find it quite easy.Playing our usual 4-5-1, we started well enough having all the play but often made the wrong choices in the last third. We still tested the Mansfield keeper on several occasions though with Burnsy, JV, Lee and Yeard all going close to making the breakthrough. Eventually it did come when after a neat passing move, a fine through ball was fed through to Burnsy who finished in the emphatic style we have become used to.
We pressed and pressed but couldn’t get the second goal before the break. We changed to a 4-4-2 at half time to give everyone a run and immediately doubled score line. A nice delivery from a Gaz corner was glanced in by Jebu who netted his first IMFC goal for some time. It didn’t take him long to get his second though and this was a real picture book goal. Lee threw the ball to JV, who controlled it and hooked the ball over his head freeing Gaz. He beat his man and put in a pinpoint cross for Jebu to head home.
Mansfield’s heads went down pretty quickly after that and we turned it in to a rout. Andy P led by example when he rocketed in a 25 yard shot in to the top corner. We thought that was going to be the goal of the day but Andy was eclipsed with a scorching 30 yard drive from Gilby who marked his return from Iraq in fine style. It could have been double figures in the end but JV was the last to score when he poached a goal bound header from Burnsy and just managed to get the last touch. Gaz was given man of the match and he displayed some great passing skills that enabled us to record back to back 6-0 wins.
On a more disappointing note, we were on the end of another late pull out as today’s supposed opponents, Sheffield United have folded, which means we have to wait until we play Barnsley next Saturday to see if we can make it a hat-trick of 6-0 wins.
