Dwight Yorke and Andy Cole's partnership suddenly clicked as the former netted twice and the other once from Yorke's slide-rule pass. Damien Duff also got in on the act with the fourth just before half time, but it was young defender James McEveley who earned the praise of his boss.

Graeme Souness boosted his striking options today with the signing of Turkish World Cup star Hakan Sukur. This seemed to inspire his existing strikers to new levels.

Yorke started the rout in the 11th minute, heading Duff's left-wing cross past Mike Pollitt into the far corner.

The striker turned provider minutes later, feeding Cole who ran clear to finish coolly into the bottom corner.

After David Thompson cleared off the line from Richard Barker, the Rovers winger smashed a long-range effort against Pollitt's post and the ball rebounded for Yorke to impudently convert.

The scoring was completed two minutes before half time when Duff latched on to Cole's clever pass to score at the second attempt, after his first shot hit the upright.

Rovers have drawn giant-killing Wigan Athletic in the quarter-finals at the JJB Stadium.

Souness' team are now just two rounds from lining up at the Millennium Stadium, Cardiff for the second successive year.
