Forest 2 - Millers 1 AET

On a highly emotional night lit by memories of the legendary Nottingham Forest manager Brian Clough, who sadly passed away on Monday, the home side needed 120 minutes to overcome the strong resistance of Rotherham United and book their place in the third round of the Carling Cup with a 2-1 extra-time win.

Gareth Taylor's second goal of the night in the fourth minute of extra-time earned Forest a place in the third round against Doncaster Rovers.

Sedgy
But it was totally against the script of the night when supporters said goodbye to their beloved manager - Old Big 'Ead - when Chris Sedgwick was allowed to open the scoring from 11 yards out only eight minutes after the start of the game.

Taylor soon levelled, his deflected shot finding the right corner of Mike Pollitt's goal following an inch-perfect cross from the left by his strike partner David Johnson.

The home side strolled past the away defence in the second half determined to grab a winner, but several chances were squandered by the players in red, the most notable by Alan Rogers and Johnson on three occasions, one of which hit the woodwork.

Ninety minutes were not enough for either team to snatch a winner, but it only took four minutes of extra-time for Taylor to put his team ahead from just a yard out, heading the ball into the back of the net after Pollitt managed to block a shot by Eoin Jess.

It was hardy a Forest performance that Clough would have been proud of, with the home side looking more like the team that Cloughie inherited way back in 1975, before turning them into a team later called the Kings of Europe.
