Alan Lee might have done better for the home side after five minutes but his shot was straight at keeper Jason Brown after Darren Garner's neat throughball.

And only a joint challenge by Chris Swailes and Mike Pollitt at the other end prevented Guy Ipoua scoring as he beat the offside trap.

Gillingham drew level seconds later when Ipoua whipped in a cross after Paul Smith's long ball forward and Rod Wallace was perfectly positioned to tuck away a close-range shot.

A tremendous save from Brown denied Darren Byfield a spectacular Rotherham goal after 33 minutes when he tipped it round before McIntosh was wide with another header.

Soon after the restart Lee made the wrong choice and headed wide when a shot was the better option before Paul Warne blazed over another attempt.
