Jack Dunn hat-trick does for Championship Rotherham
Jack Dunn scored a hat-trick for Morecambe as Championship Rotherham were sent packing in the EFL Cup in an extra-time 5-4 defeat.
Dunn, on loan from Liverpool, completed his treble deep into the additional period after ex-Miller Kevin Ellison had given the League Two side the lead moments before to provide a memorable win.
They were minutes from going out, though, as Rotherham led 3-2 in injury time of normal time until Dunn fired home a penalty after being fouled by Richard Wood.
It was a good evening from the start for Jim Bentley's men as Cole Stockton stroked them ahead in the sixth minute after a defensive error.
Greg Halford levelled from the spot on the hour but was then the villain as his error allowed Dunn his first in the 68th minute.
Two goals in two minutes looked like sending Alan Stubbs' men through, though, as Jerry Yates fired his first senior goal in and then Anthony Forde put them in front.
But deep into injury time Dunn was fouled by Wood and he converted to send the game into extra-time.
Ellison then rammed home in the 113th minute to put Morecambe ahead again before Dunn completed his treble with an accomplished finish to give the Shrimps a 5-3 lead.
Yates' second at the death gave Rotherham hope but they could not force a leveller and were knocked out to leave Stubbs waiting for his first win in charge.
